NBA Statistics: Measuring a Player's Efficiency
The National Basketball Association uses a statistic called Player Efficiency Rating (PER) to rate each of its players' performances. John Hollinger developed this stat to measure the efficiency of a
player by taking into consideration all statistics kept by the NBA, and weights
the player's production by minutes played per game, and number of team
possessions per game. Using the PER formula to calculate a player's efficiency is much more detailed and accurate by
using per-minute statistics, rather than raw totals or per-game numbers. It combines all the positive and negative statistics that a player records in a game into one number, which serves as a great method for comparison. Per-minute statistics are far more meaningful in representing a player's
productivity than any other method. Downloading the powerpoint and worksheet below will teach you how the NBA uses the Player Efficiency Rating statistic.
